As well as being the capital city of the United States of America, Washington is also a much-visited tourist destination in its own right.

What to See in Washington DC

Visitors can be steeped in American history from the historic White House, the seat of the President, to the Abraham Lincoln Memorial. Washington is a sought-after destination for history devotees. The National Archives house the Bill of Rights and the Declaration of Independence. Other famous monuments include those of Martin Luther King and Franklin Roosevelt. For art lovers, there is the famous Smithsonian Institue with its unique collection of paintings and sculptures. There is also the National Air and Space Museum and the National Gallery of Art, amongst many others.

Other Famous Tourist Sites

Nature lovers can visit Fort Reno park with its rich diversity of wildlife and the Little Falls on the Potomac River. Other places to visit are the US National Arboretum, Anacostia Park, and Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens, to name a few. Washington DC is blessed with an abundance of all kinds of parks which are a great way to relax or spot an elusive bird or animal in the wild. It also has 68 recreation centers and 40 swimming pools. Shopping fans can visit the National Mall, which is a massive indoor shopping complex. Sports lovers will note that Washington hosts all four professional US sports, which are soccer, baseball, American football, and basketball.
